From the 7/26 Show – The Folly of the Legitimate Pain Patient

In the never ending media blitz by the drug companies the “legitimate pain patient” is often referred to. In response, at the mid break I played a piece created from excerpts from a show MTV created called Off the Wagon. http://www.mtv.com/videos/misc/334911/off-the-wagon.jhtml. Some selected quotes from the piece were from a 20 something young man……”OxyContin gives me escape and comfort”. “ top of the world and found my love”. “didn’t want to work or go to school”
This message is in sharp contrast to a recent post to a web site that was shared with me.
>>>I was disgusted by what I read on your sites. Nowhere did I read about this drug killing someone who was taking it as prescribed and never abused the drug. Do you have that information or do you not care about these people? This drug gave me a quality of life that nothing else had given me. I am a 59 year old woman who suffers from severe disk disease in my spine. I cannot describe the pain. It was so bad it spread down my legs to my feet. I could not get out of bed most days and needed help the days I did get up. I also suffer from severe arthritis that keeps my knees swollen most days. I couldn’t pick up my 1 year old grandchild. I could not play with my grandchildren. It broke my heart. I was put on Oxycontin in 2001. I have thanked God everyday. I take my PRESCRIBED AMOUNT in the morning and within the hour, I can get out of bed alone! I can dress alone! I CAN PLAY WITH MY GRANDCHILDREN!!!!

I get no “high” when I take this medication. I feel no different than when I take my blood pressure pill. I was in Arizona last year and did not realize my pills would be gone 2 days before I returned to Missouri. So, I went 2 days without the Oxycontin and did just fine……..

When I saw your petition to ban this drug, I wanted to vomit. You would see many, many people like me go back to having no quality of life just to help those who choose to abuse the drug, who choose to obtain it and use or sell it illegally. You stand up for the ones who crush it, shoot it with a needle, again by choice. You give no thought to the thousands who do not lie, cheat, steal, and abuse drugs. No thought at all.

I wonder how you sleep at night. I will pray for you and all the addicts who are threatening my quality of life…a life I have lived honestly and followed all the rules. God help you.<<<<<
On the show I asked what the “PRESCRIBED AMOUNT” is? I have never heard of anyone going two days without their OxyContin and “doing just fine”. The lack of caring for those who have succumbed to the heroin like drug astounded me. I did ask the writer to join me on the show and my record remains intact. The legitimate pain patient, experts and the drug companies have remained silent on the radio show.
Finally, in contrast to the previous writer, this was posted on http://www.banoxycontin.com recently.
>>>Oxycontin is deadly, addictive and destructive. Users will inevitably become addicts, regardless of whatever euphemism is used by the medical establishment such as “therapeutic habituation.” It is a difficult drug to stop using, although it can be done. Prescribing this heroin-like opiate for headaches, muscle aches or back pain is overmedicating a symptom, and far too often creates more severe consequences for the patient, like hypersensitivity to pain when the body’s own resources are shut down by the toxic effects of sustained-release oxycodone. Having stopped using this poison, my life has returned. My days do not orbit around the number of pills I have in my vial, and I am not in fear of not having this drug available. I also don’t have the pain that I had when I was taking huge doses of this terrible medicine. I am free. If you are taking Oxycontin, your family more than likely wants you off of it. Make your choice, and get your priorities straight. If you make the right decision, your loved ones will be so grateful you cannot even imagine. Bless you all. >>>>
A response from the legitimate pain patients is welcome?
