A mantra of the groups who advocate for the liberalization of the drug laws continue to refer to the “drug war” as racist. The number of minority individuals in prison do to drug offenses is overwhelmingly disproportionate to the number of individuals with an Anglo Saxon background.
The show remains apolitical and will reveal the shortcomings of either major political party. The fact that the Democratic Party created and leads the “War on Drugs” is an historical fact. After the death of Len Bias from a crack cocaine overdose in 1986, Democratic Representative Tip O’Neil led the push for legislation that would create minimum sentences for the possession of specific drugs. Then President Ronald Reagan did agree, but it was Tip O’Neil and the Democrats who increased the penalties to prove that the Democrats too were concerned about crime.
Prior to 1986, there were a limited number of minimum penalties for the possession of drugs. Even though Republican President Nixon created the phrase “Drug War”, he did not create specific sentencing laws. It was the Democrats who pushed and promoted for the incarceration of more people for possessing drugs.
It remains both major political parties who remain silent while drug use increases, addiction increases, families are being torn apart and incarceration increases. Interestingly, the loudest vocal element are groups who classify the Drug War as racist which was created by the political party most of them identify with.
