From the 8/30 Show – ADHD Revisited

My thanks go to Dr. Jeanne Stolzer and Kevin Miller for joining me last night. It was a fast hour. Discussing ADHD as our children go back to school needs the time equivalent of a semester. Once again the logic of giving our children the equivalent of cocaine and drugs that we don’t want in our rivers and streams was challenged.

In particular, Dr. Stolzer reminded us that all mammals have young males who don’t sit still. When did our society develop the “scientific” conclusion that children running and not sitting quietly is inappropriate behavior? The junk science used to drug our children of this generation will be written about by future generations with quizzical wonderment.

I received some particularly poignant comments from a listener.

“Thanks for addressing such a critical issue. This issue bothers me even more than the fact that our society is addicted to elusion.”
“I can’t believe that giving a kid a drug to make his brain develop faster (in a nutshell, that’s what they’re trying to convince us) won’t ultimately be harmful. And what about all the daydreaming future world changers who are stifled because they don’t fit into the Stepford Child mold of babies who can read?”
“Whatever happened to letting them be kids and enjoy the only time they get to be carefree? Doesn’t jamming all this learning down their throats and constantly raising our expectations just lead to more stressed out adults, who then need to take mood stabilizers just to get through the day? It’s a vicious cycle.”
I am appreciative the radio show attracts the attention of individuals who have not succumbed to the masterful marketing by the drug companies who attempt to stifle all creative thought. Comments welcome.
