Partnership for a Drug Free America Busted on 9/21 Show

The Partnership for a Drug Free America (PDFA) has been in the forefront of bringing awareness to the ramifications of illicit drug use. If it is an illegal drug, PDFA has been outspoken against it. However, the PDFA organization has apparently lost its focus and purpose. In our State of Florida, the Florida Medical Examiners Report indicated over 700 people died from an overdose of oxycodone and another 549 people had oxycodone in their body at the time of their death. An active ingredient in the brands Oxycontin and Percocet contain oxycodone.
On the PDFA website, two supporters of FDFA are the Purdue Pharma and Endo pharmaceutical companies, both major marketers of products that contain oxycodone. To my knowledge, the PDFA has never publicly spoken out on the dangers of specific prescription brand names and seldom on the generic drug names. In Florida, the Medical Examiners report indicates we lost over seven times more people last year to oxycodone than we reportedly lost to heroin. Over eleven times more people had oxycodone in their bodies at the time of their deaths than heroin in the same year, 2007. Any narcotics officer and addiction counselor will tell you that oxycodone and heroin are basicly interchangable.
Both on the radio show of 9/21 and via this blog, it is a fair question in asking if the drug companies have taken over the control of the Partnership for a Drug Free America. When is PDFA going to speak out on the addictions and death being implicated from Oxycontin, Percocet, Vicodin, Methadone, Duragesic, etc? Erin,I lost my son in 2006 from OxyContin overdose. He was 19 yrs. old at the time. Because I had no idea about this drug nor I ever heard about it and alywas made sure my children are alywas educated well about drugs, I used to make sure my son was reminded to not use drugs. This is all I would tell along with the danger of underage drinking. The feeling of devastation of losing my son to something I believe could’ve been prevented if ony he knew about the dangers. He never was involved in using illicit pills, but I learned he did used Rx pills with friends, but his death was caused by opiods only which he took one 80mg and half of another 80mg crushed and snorted and his organs shut down and killed him on February 27, 2006. I give you lots of credits for sharing your story about your brother (bless his soul) and very proud of you for doing something to get the word out because many parents had no idea about this Rx pill and its popularity of being used as part of a party drug. I, myself have done in my power to spread the dangers of OxyContin. I started Legal but Deadly Legal Drugs are just as Deadly as Illegal Drugs and have been speaking publicly about my tragedgy and educate students, parents, and public about the dangers of Rx abuse.
