From the 4/25 Show - Our Thirst for Drugs and Alcohol Fuels Violence and Crime - Legal or Illegal

April 27, 2010 07:25 by larry

The proponents of legalization use the argument that legalizing drugs will solve many problems.  There is an implication in the inane logic that legalizing will stop the thousands of incarcerations, violence and family turmoil drugs are a partner in.  The proponents conveniently forget that legalized alcohol remains a part of many reasons people end up in jail.  Alcohol induced violence remains a major problem in this country.

It is naive to believe the killings in Mexico and along our borders will come to a grinding halt by legalizing drugs.  A new term you will be hearing from our government officials is "harm reduction".  In other words, drugs are ok if used responsibly.  Using drugs responsibly will stop the organized crime in Mexico.

Legalizing and promoting marijuana is opening up another entire set of problems in this country.  Parents of children hooked on their daily joints may want to weigh in on the merits of marijuana.  Implying that heroin, cocaine and methamphetamines should be legal is lunacy to a country that prides itself on self reliance and independence.

The people who listen to the radio show know what drugs do to an individual and making them legal would not change a thing in respect to changing the mind that has been hijacked by the drugs.

This country has to understand that there is money in drugs, alcohol and tobacco.  Whether legal or illegal the substances are going to produce an outcome of crime, addiction and death.

The number one goal for the radio show has become education.  The schools and colleges have failed miserably on educating our children on the dangers of drugs to the mind.   With legalization I envision a "Cocaine Lite" commercial following a "Bud Lite" commercial.

Help me understand the logic of legalizing before educating.

In my opinion the upheaval over this Arizona law is asinine. People say it's discriminatory, but if you think about it there aren't a lot of blonde illegal aliens coming over the Arizona border.

Great blog post, Larry. I listened to the show Sunday night and found it very illuminating. It's funny to me when I stop and remember back when I was running to and from pharmacies desparately trying to get my "legal" drug fix. They often said to me, "This is a controlled substance," when explaining why I couldn't get it refilled early. When I think back on it, this even drives home further why people need to understand that legalizing a controlled substance won't stop people's lives from being destroyed.

Unless of course, they want to become like me: a person who had everything--education, smarts, money, friends--and who lost everything because of addiction. I'm still, even four years after the fact, trying to put my life back together. It's almost impossible to do it. And, that is why so many people don't put their lives back together. They give up and give in to the substance and just die.

Legalizing controlled substances is NOT the answer.

Great article. Legalising drugs certainly gives governmnent control over drugs coming into the country, but it doesn't solve the problem of people taking them. If you legalise them or not, people will still take drugs. You're totally right that education is the answer - people need to know from a young age that drugs are bad.
